Georg A.Vihos’s long
and distinguished career developed from his rich
Greek ethnic sources. It reflects a deep and mystical
childhood along with a natural disposition to focus
and make art, discovering untapped nourishment in
his work, ever learning to become a more skillful
artist, and making his art materialize with artistic
depth. Vihos passionately establishes his professionalism
and craft inevitable playing out the fine work he
produces today.
Vihos’s extensive and worldly
traveling experiences include a prestigious
US Fulbright-Hays Fellowship stay in Italy as
well as many visits to other cultural meccas of
the world afforded by Louis Comfort Tiffany prize
money. These awards credit the high quality of
his work and clearly shape his artistic nature.
Vihos lived extensively in Florence, Italy, Athens
Greece, Paris, New York City, San Francisco, and
Chicago and now in the United States in Hamtramck,
Michigan where he currently lives and works.
Vihos’ "Luminescent"
work was singled-out to show in a special exhibit
and lecture for young people at the Metropolitan
Junior Museum of Art in New York City. The work
was titled You Are An Artist Too.
Vihos’ reputation and work
are included repeatedly in exhibitions at The
Detroit Institute of Arts and The Art Institute
of Chicago. His commissions include the Peat Marwick
and Mitchell Headquarters in Chicago, the nationally
known advertising firm W.B. Doner Company in Southfield,
Michigan and the new corporate offices of world
famous trial lawyer Geoffrey Fieger.
Vihos gained mastery with his
10 by 12 foot vacuum encasement mounted Butterfly
titled, Transformation, which is monumentally
displayed suspended from the ceiling within a
three story atrium in the receiving lobby of the
Providence Hospital Mission Health Center, a $38
million dollar facility in Livonia, Michigan.
Vihos’s work is exceptionally
represented and admired in great collections worldwide.
Over the years, Vihos’ art has evolved,
exploring new approaches and ideas. Vihos notes
the dilemma every artist confronts again and again;
that is when to stick with familiar tools and
materials, and when to reach out and embrace those
which offer new possibilities.
"In the past 40 years, my
reputation has been modeled from my approach to
draw on mural size, seamless paper," explains
Vihos. "The truth highlights the familiar
and predictable underlying nature of things for
all artists. My work has reached proportions that
stagger even my own imagination.”
